View of a Butcher's Shop · Gen 1
Description
Vincent van Gogh (1888)
About the Work
Painted in February 1888 shortly after his arrival in Arles, View of a Butcher's Shop is Van Gogh's first painting of the town. Looking out through a door, he captured the glistening, snow-dusted street and the vibrant storefront across the way. Van Gogh's thick, deliberate brushstrokes—especially noticeable in the wrought-iron balcony and the heavy folds of the curtain—create an incredible sense of depth and immediate physical presence, perfectly suited for a tactile canvas.
